Lan Ha Bay Cruise: One Day, One Night or Two Nights?
Lan Ha Bay cruise 1 night or 2 nights, or a day boat: what each length gets you on the water, what it costs and who it suits, cruise by cruise.
For most people one night is the right length. A two-day cruise gives you an afternoon on the water, sunset and a night at anchor among the karst, and an early morning before the boat turns back, with every meal on board: BAT Group’s Hanoi: 2 Days Lan Ha & Halong Bay 5-Star Cruise with Balcony is from $142 in current promotion (usually $182) a person (checked November 2026). A second night is worth it if you want Viet Hai village and Ba Trai Dao as well as the cave; a day boat suits you if you are staying on Cat Ba or are short of time and money.
The calendar above is that cruise: check-in at Tuan Chau Harbor in Ha Long, lunch as the ship sails into Lan Ha Bay, the Dark and Bright Cave by kayak or bamboo boat or a swim at Ba Trai Dao or Tra Bau, a cooking class and dinner at anchor, then Tai Chi, kayaking at Ao Ech or a cave on Cat Ba, and brunch on the way back. Cabins have a private balcony; the shared bus from Hanoi is US$25 a person for the round trip.

Prices from the listings (GetYourGuide checked November 2026): Cat Ba Local’s day boat, BAT Group’s two days, Carnival’s three days.
One night: what the 24 hours look like
The overnight ships check in at about midday and are back at the marina by about 11:00 to 11:30 the next day, so a night on board is roughly one afternoon and one morning on the water. The afternoon is the main stop: on BAT Group’s cruise either the Dark and Bright Cave by kayak or bamboo boat, or kayaking and a swim at Ba Trai Dao or Tra Bau, picked on the day for the weather and tide. Evening is sunset on deck, a cooking class, dinner at anchor and squid fishing; morning is Tai Chi, a short kayak at Ao Ech or a cave on Cat Ba, then check-out and brunch while the ship sails back.
That is enough to see the bay at its best, at dusk and at first light, when the day boats have gone. It is not enough to see Cat Ba itself: the morning stop is short.
Two nights: the middle day
A second night buys a whole day in the bay. On Carnival’s three days, *Hanoi: 3Day 5-Star Cruise Ha Long, Lan Ha & Viet Hai Cycling*, day one is the Dark and Light Cave by bamboo boat and a swim; day two is a tender to Cat Ba, about 4 km by bicycle or electric cart through Viet Hai village in the national park, lunch on board and an afternoon kayaking and swimming at Ba Trai Dao; day three is a last kayak before brunch. It costs from $266 a person (checked November 2026), with the taxes and sightseeing fees included and the bus from Hanoi extra.
Not every three-day cruise prices the same way. Marvel Travel’s Hanoi: 3-Day Ha Long/Lan Ha Bay Cruise with Private Balcony is $306 a person (checked November 2026), and its listing adds government VAT of US$25 a person and a US$20 peak-season charge from 1 October to 30 April. Read the excluded list before you compare.
For the three-day cruises one by one, with the bus, VAT and single-cabin charges each adds, lanhabaycruise2nights.com lines up the prices.
A day boat
The day boats from Cat Ba are the cheapest way onto Lan Ha Bay and give you more time in a kayak than a one-night ship does. Cat Ba Local’s runs about eight hours from Cat Ba town, in groups of up to 30, with kayaks through lagoons and two caves, lunch at anchor and a swim at Ba Trai Dao, from $32 (checked November 2026). The catch is that you have to be on Cat Ba first. From Hanoi, a day cruise from Tuan Chau is possible but long: about six hours on the road for about seven on the water (Hanoi to Lan Ha Bay has the times).
