Lan Ha Bay vs Ha Long Bay: What Is Different on the Water

Lan Ha Bay vs Ha Long Bay: one World Heritage property, two cities, two sets of fees and piers. Where each bay is, what you see, and which cruise suits whom.

Updated November 2026

Lan Ha Bay and Ha Long Bay are the same kind of place, steep limestone islands rising out of calm green water, and since September 2023 they have been one UNESCO World Heritage property, Ha Long Bay - Cat Ba Archipelago. The differences are administrative and practical. Ha Long Bay belongs to Quang Ninh and is far bigger; Lan Ha Bay lies off Cat Ba Island in Hai Phong, with more small beaches and the national park on its shore. Most “Lan Ha” cruises start in Ha Long and cross over. If you want Lan Ha and nothing else, start on Cat Ba: Venezia Cruises’ Hanoi: 2 Days Lan Ha Bay Cruise with Meals & Activities leaves from Ben Beo pier, from $125 in current promotion (usually $139) a person (checked November 2026).

The calendar above is that cruise: two days in groups of up to 15, on a boat of five or ten cabins, from Cat Ba through Cua Dong to Ba Trai Dao for kayaking and a swim, dinner and squid fishing at anchor, and a bicycle or electric-cart ride to Viet Hai village the next morning. All entrance and government fees are in the price; a single traveller pays US$50 more.

Is Lan Ha Bay quieter?

Operators sell Lan Ha as the quiet side. Neither board publishes boat counts for its whole bay, so treat “quieter” as the operators’ word. What the press does report is that more than 50 overnight boats serve the routes between the two bays (2026).

The difference you will actually feel is where the day starts. A ship from Tuan Chau spends part of each day crossing the south of Ha Long Bay; a boat from Ben Beo is in Lan Ha within minutes. Since the March 2026 agreement between Hai Phong and Quang Ninh, the Ha Long to Lan Ha routes are sold as overnight cruises, and their Lan Ha legs name stops including Gia Luan, Tra Bau, Ong Cam, the Bright and Dark caves, Ba Trai Dao, Quai To, Viet Hai and, on one route, the Cai Beo fishing village.

Is Lan Ha Bay part of Ha Long Bay?

Not administratively. Ha Long Bay is Quang Ninh’s; Lan Ha Bay is Hai Phong’s, managed from Cat Ba with its own fees. But in September 2023 UNESCO extended the Ha Long Bay World Heritage site to take in the Cat Ba archipelago, including most of Cat Ba National Park and its marine protected areas, so the two are now one property of 65,650 hectares and 1,133 islands and islets. In that sense, yes: Lan Ha Bay is World Heritage, and it is the same landscape.

Which one, for whom

  • First visit, one night, from Hanoi: a ship from Tuan Chau that crosses into Lan Ha, such as BAT Group's two days, from $142 in current promotion (usually $182) (checked November 2026). You see both bays.
  • Beaches, kayaks and small boats: start on Cat Ba and stay in Lan Ha, on the cruise above or a day boat.
  • The big show caves: Ha Long’s central routes. For Ha Long Bay’s own cruises from Hanoi, day trips and the best time to go, halongbaycruisehanoi.com covers Ha Long Bay in depth.
  • Cat Ba itself: Lan Ha, with a stop at Viet Hai in the national park.
